WHAT IS TELETHERAPY?
With one-to-one video sessions, virtual care offers clients easy, on-demand care. There are fewer disruptions to the daily schedule, no need for hurried, lengthy commutes or extra time away from work, and clients can remain in the comfort of their homes, offices, hotel rooms, or even vehicles. Delays to receiving treatment can be shortened when a client is not reliant on a short list of therapists within a close commute. Additionally, clients who travel frequently do not have to worry about disrupting the consistency of their sessions.
IS TELETHERAPY APPROPRIATE FOR ALL CLIENTS?
The simple answer is No. Teletherapy would not be appropriate for clients who are actively suicidal, dealing with active addictions, or are not stabilized with their medication. Additionally, in my experience, working with children and teens is more effective in person.
When clients call to inquire about services, we will determine if teletherapy is right for them.
IS TELETHERAPY SECURE AND HIPAA COMPLIANT?
Yes. I utilize Simple Practice, a HIPPA-compliant, secure, and confidential digital platform, for electronic health records and video sessions. All practice forms and documents are managed digitally, allowing for more client convenience.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
When clients decide to work with me through telehealth, they will receive an invitation to create their secure and private client portal. This will be used to transfer documents, secure messaging, and provide links for the video sessions.
Ten minutes before the session begins, the client will receive a link to their private client portal via email and text. Clients using their computers will click the link and connect to the virtual waiting room. If they use their phone, they must first download the Simple Practice app. Once downloaded, they can click the link in their text message or email, connecting them to the virtual waiting room.
WHAT WILL CLIENTS SEE DURING A TELETHERAPY SESSION?
I will open the secure video link when notified that the client has entered the virtual "waiting room." Clients will immediately see me and a portion of my office. Occasionally, clients may see a member of my "therapy team" poke their heads into the picture. These would be my dogs, Maggie, Jake, and Lizzie.
My office is private and secluded. I keep a white noise machine outside my office door to prevent anyone from listening to my therapy conversations. Additionally, I wear earbuds so only I can hear what my clients say.
HOW CAN CLIENTS CONTRIBUTE TO A COMFORTABLE TELETHERAPY EXPERIENCE?
Clients are encouraged to choose a quiet, confidential area free from distractions where they feel comfortable speaking freely. Ideally, their device is connected to WIFI or has a strong data signal. If a client chooses to do their session away from home, information will be briefly collected on their whereabouts. This is for safety purposes in the event of an emergency.
